COVINGTON -- The Newton County Board of Education recently adopted its 2011 meeting schedule.

It is similar to years past, with most of meetings scheduled for the second and third Tuesday of each month, as directed by board policy. The board tends to hold its monthly work session on the second Tuesday and its regular session meeting on the third Tuesday of the month.

The school board will stray from the usual schedule in June, when it will meet on the first and second Tuesdays of the month, and in October, when it will meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month due to an anticipated fall break. Newton County School System Superintendent Gary Mathews said the development of the 2011-12 school year calendar is on hold pending budget reductions, but a proposed calendar calls for a fall break during the week of the third Tuesday of October.

As usual, the board plans to meet only once in July and December -- on July 19 and Dec. 13 -- for one combined work session and regular session meeting.

All meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Newton County Board of Education building, which is located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington. The board usually meets in executive session at 5:30 p.m. before each meeting; it is closed to the public, as allowed by law, for the discussion of land acquisition, personnel or potential litigation.

All other meetings are open to the public.
