CONYERS -- A local man discovered it is difficult to escape the long arm of the law, especially when officers have new technology to assist them.
Yibiao Jiang, 55, of 1768 Fox Chase, was arrested by the Conyers Police Department Monday night after he allegedly stole an iPhone 4G valued at $650 from another man at LA Fitness on Ga. Highway 138.
Police responded to the athletic club at about 10 p.m. after the 20-year-old victim discovered that his iPhone had been taken. The victim said he placed the phone on a bench with his clothes and stood facing the wall while he changed into his swimsuit. He told police he secured his clothes in a locker and didn't notice that his iPhone was gone until he finished his swim and returned to the locker room.
The victim, who is a student at Georgia State University, told police he could locate his iPhone using the online Find iPhone app, which provides registered users with a map showing where the iPhone is located.
The app showed that the victim's phone had been taken to a duplex on Fox Chase Court. A group of officers set up a perimeter at Fox Chase Court, and two officers made contact with the suspect.
The phone was located undamaged and returned to its owner. An LA Fitness access card was also found on a key ring belonging to Jiang.
Jiang was taken to the Rockdale County Jail where he remained Wednesday on charges of felony theft by taking and theft by shoplifting.
