COMMERCE -- Both Newton basketball teams reached their respective championship games of the Wing Slingers Holiday Bash at East Jackson High School.
The boys got a game-high 26 points from Stephen Croone and out-rebounded Banks County 41-19 in a 57-45 victory.
Newton (6-3) will play the winner of Athens Academy-River Ridge tonight at 8:30 p.m.
"We didn't play great, but we still did enough to win," said Rams coach Rick Rasmussen.
The girls also knocked off Banks County, 58-48 in the semifinals, behind 25 points from Mikola Burks.
J.L. Mann (S.C.) 57, Rockdale 48: Rockdale suffered its first loss of the season Thursday in the Peach State Holiday Invitational.
The Bulldogs (9-1) fell to J.L. Mann (S.C.), 57-48 in the championship game of the silver bracket.
Despite the loss, Brianna Lawrence completed an excellent tournament. The guard, who signed with Tennessee State, scored 16 points in the championship game and 64 in three tournament games (21.3 average), including a career-high 34 in a semifinal win over Apalachee.
Alcovy 48, Holy Innocents 46: The Tigers bounced back from their first loss of the season in Wednesday's semifinals with a victory in the third-place game of the white bracket. Ashley Williams led Alcovy (11-1) with 24 points.
