CONYERS -- The Conyers post of Veterans of Foreign Wars is looking to recruit new members to the organization, particularly those who have recently served in the military.

Vince Przybyszewski, VFW quartermaster, said most current members are veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars, with a few members who served in World War II.

"We are looking for younger members who are coming from Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq," Przybyszewski said. "My concern has always been how many of these guys and gals really know we are here."

Przybyszewski said the Conyers VFW post, which is located at 1432 VFW Drive, serves veterans in Rockdale, Newton and DeKalb counties. There are now more than 500 members at the post, but Przybyszewski said the number of active members is much smaller.

The VFW provides services to veterans as well as social activities.

"We do provide a lot of assistance for veterans and their families," said Przybyszewski. "Most of the time we can't help them financially, but we can direct them to a bigger organization that can or the national headquarters."

The Conyers post also hosts bingo every Tuesday and Friday nights at 7:30 and sponsors dances a couple of times throughout the year, as well as a cookout that is jointly held with Granite Mountain Harley Davidson.

Membership dues are $30 per year or a "life membership fee," which is determined by the age of the member at the time of application.

There are usually several members at the Conyers post on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and from noon until 9 p.m. on Saturdays who can provide additional information or assistance, according to Przybyszewski. The post can be reached by phone at 770-483-7443. The post also has a Facebook Page.
