COVINGTON -- Investigators with the Covington Fire Department are looking into a suspicious fire that occurred around 3 a.m. Friday.
The single family, frame structure at 9161 Jefferson Village Ave. was approximately 50 percent involved when firefighters arrived at the scene.
"Once we got the fire knocked down and contained, we realized it was a vacant house," said CFD Capt. Tony Smith. "Further investigation showed signs of arson and evidence there led us to believe this was not an accidental fire."
Smith said the home is a total loss and is valued at around $110,000. The next door home suffered cosmetic damage due to the heat, but there were no injuries as a result of the blaze.
Smith asked that anyone who has information about this fire to call him at 770-385-3155 or call the 24-hour Arson Tip Line at 1-800-282-5804. Rewards of up to $10,000 are given for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist. Callers can choose to remain anonymous. The tip line is sponsored by the Georgia Insurance and Fire Safety Commission and the Georgia Arson Control Board.
