CONYERS -- Looking for that last minute Christmas gift that has a Rockdale County connection? The Kiwanis Club of Conyers has the answer with a polished brass ornament that is a replica of the Walk of Heroes/Veterans War Memorial at Black Shoals Park.
Ed Conway, president of the Kiwanis Club of Conyers, said this is the second year the club has designed and produced an ornament to sell as a fund-raiser. Last year's ornament depicted the Conyers Depot.
Conway said the ornament was made overseas and was held up in customs, which is why sales are getting started a little late. He thanked Tommy Clack, director of Veterans Services in Conyers, for helping to get the word out.
"He stepped in and helped us out and sent out emails to all his associates," Conway said.
Conway said the selection of the subject for the ornament is determined by club vote.
"We look at the various things in Conyers and Rockdale that are part of our history and then we decide," he said.
He said this year's ornament features very fine detail and artwork.
The ornaments cost $10 each and are available at Peoples Bank, 1793 Ga. Highway 138 SE; Conyers City Hall, 1184 Scott St.; Conyers Welcome Center, in the Depot on Railroad Street in Olde Town Conyers; and at the Veterans Services Office, 983 Taylor St.
Proceeds from ornament sales benefit children's programs support by Kiwanis, both locally and internationally.
"That's what we are dedicated to is changing the world, one child at a time," said Conway.
