Gravel truck flips over on Klondike, two other accidents ensue

Three separate accidents occurring along a stretch of Klondike Road north of Interstate 20 snared area traffic shortly before 12 p.m. Thursday. A dump truck flipped on its side and spilled its load of gravel while exiting at West Avenue from the east-bound lanes of I-20. That accident was followed by a Conyers city garbage truck striking a Rockdale County Sheriff's Office patrol car that was responding to the dump truck accident. The third accident occurred at Klondike Road and Iris Drive where two vehicles crashed into one another as traffic was being diverted from the dump truck. National EMS reported it transported one person, the gravel truck driver, to Grady Memorial Hospital.

CONYERS -- A heavy duty truck flipped on its side and spilled its load of gravel Thursday on Klondike Road and was the first of three accidents occurring along a short stretch of road north of Interstate 20.

Three separate accident occurring along a stretch of Klondike Road north of Interstate 20 snared area traffic shortly before noon Thursday.

Conyers Police Department, Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Rockdale County Fire and Rescue and National EMS responded to the scene of the accidents. All of the accidents happened within minutes of one another between the I-20 exit ramp from the eastbound lanes and Iris Drive.

RCSO Capt. Kris Traylor said at the scene that he would not describe the accidents as a chain reaction, but as separate and "two accidents occurring as a result of the dump truck."

The first accident involved a heavy duty truck that flipped onto its left side as it pulled onto Klondike Road from the West Avenue exit . The truck turned over on its driver's side in front of the McDonald's restaurant and blocked two lanes.

Conyers Police worked the accident involving the dump truck. Wrecker crews and city workers were able to pull the truck upright, reload the gravel back into the truck and clear the accident scene quickly.

The second accident occurred when an RCSO patrol car arrived at the scene to help direct traffic and was struck from behind by a city of Conyers garbage truck, Traylor said. That accident caused minor damage to both vehicles as they pulled into an empty gas station off Klondike Road next to the Comfort Inn.

A Georgia State Patrol car pulled into the gas station to make the report on the accident involving the county Sheriff's Office and city garbage truck.

The third accident involved a GMC Yukon SUV and a small white sedan at the intersection of Klondike Road and Iris Drive. Traylor said the accident occurred while the Sheriff's Office was starting to divert traffic away from the dump truck at the intersection.

The incident was still under investigation Thursday afternoon. Shortly after the crash, the Yukon faced east as it was parked on the corner of Klondike and Iris and suffered significant damage on its driver side. The white sedan was seen on the wrecker flatbed truck with significant damage to its front end.

Traylor said he could not comment on the condition of the drivers involved but the air bags in both vehicles were triggered by the crash. National EMS technicians were on the scene providing medical assistance.

Huey Atkins with National EMS said they took only the driver of the dump truck to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he was listed in stable condition. There were no other reports of injuries from the other crashes.

Charges were pending following completion of the investigation of the accidents.
