Daryl Fletcher, Conyers-Rockdale Library System director.
CONYERS -- The Conyers-Rockdale County Library Board of Trustees named Daryl Fletcher the new director of the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library last week after serving as interim director for the last six months.
The library board took the interim off of Fletcher's title that he has had since former director Deborah Manget did not have her contract renewed in April.
Fletcher has been with the library since 2006 as the assistant director for technical services. He played a significant role in implementing several technical improvements at the library during the facility's recent expansion and renovation.
The trustees did not take applications for the job after Manget left. Board of Trustee Chairman Jerry Troff said the board wanted to see Fletcher's performance as interim and everyone was pleased with his work.
Troff said Fletcher's experience in technology was something the trustees wanted to have to move forward.
"His technology background, both in and outside of the public library setting, is so important and necessary to keep our library on the cutting edge of computer networking and telecommunications which is required by the patrons that enter the Nancy Guinn Library every day," Troff said. "Our library is so much more than a repository of books."
The library, located at 864 Green St. in Olde Town Conyers, saw its largest expansion project since the library moved into the facility in 1990. The expansion and renovation work was funded through the 2005 SPLOST program. Among the improvements are an enlarged children's area and a tripling of the number of public access computers.
Fletcher garnered support from library trustees, elected officials and community groups during his stint as interim director. He also has a good working relationship with library staff and Friends of the Library volunteers, all who support him being named director, according to a press release from the library.
Fletcher has been a librarian since 1995 and has a bachelor of arts degree in communication and a master of library information science, both from the University of Alabama. He has also worked for the Georgia Public Library Service and Interface Electronics.
He succeeds Manget who had been the only library director since the Conyers-Rockdale Library System was established in 1985 when it was spun off from what was then the DeKalb-Rockdale Library System. She served as the Conyers branch manager before the spin off and when the library was located on Pine Street, currently the county Tax Commissioner's office.
"I certainly appreciate the confidence and support that has been shown to me by the library board and staff," Fletcher said in a statement.
"Our library is a shining star in Rockdale County, and there is more demand for everything we offer than ever before. While we are not immune to the challenges facing all libraries these days, I am extremely optimistic about the future of our library."
