Locals in Senior All-Star Bowl

COVINGTON — Football is not over for several of the best senior players in Rockdale and Newton county as 13 local players have been selected to play in the Georgia High School Senior All-Star Bowl at the Georgia Dome on Sunday.

“It’s a great honor and the ball game is something they’ll always remember; to get a chance to play in the Georgia Dome and just being able to be around these types of players for a week,” Eastside head coach Rick Hurst said. “I think that they understand that they’re right there with the best of the best. That’s always encouraging to be able to see those guys stand up to the rest of the talent in the metro Atlanta area and probably some of the best in Georgia. We have three guys representing us and that’s a pretty good accomplishment.”

Eastside has three players representing the East team, which is coached by Salem’s John Starr. Playing from Eastside are Blake Rouse, Shaquille Huff and Dante Blackmon.

“This week watching him in the all-star practice and coaching him, he’s as good as anybody on our East squad,” Hurst said of Blackmon. “He may be the best corner we have. That’s saying a lot considering the talent that we have out there. It’s awesome to see him have the type of year he had.”

Other players from Newton county are Alcovy’s Tre Sorrells and Newton’s Chase Dial and Antonio Williams.

Players from Rockdale include Salem’s Kelvin Whitter, Brandon Culler, Jahaad Coleman and Che’ Darious and Heritage’s Quami Stanley, Brandon Campbell and Ryan Watson.

While the game is mainly for the players, there will be a lot of other people interested in the game — like college coaches.

“We’ve had quite a few in there watching practices, I don’t know if they’re allowed to watch the game, but I know a lot of them are going to be requesting film. I definitely think it will increase their stock,” Hurst said.

Besides the all-star game, which starts at 6 p.m., two other games will be played at the Georgia Dome. One game is the Historical Black College Senior Bowl and the Newton County Rams 12-under team. The Rams will play for the state championship after going 14-0 this season.

Tickets for the game can be bought at the gate or at Ticketmaster for $20.

“I know those guys would like to have a lot of support from Newton County to come out and support them,” Hurst said.
