CONYERS -- Local health and education organization Helping Hands Outreach will hold its fifth annual Healthy for the Holidays health fair Saturday that will offer free health testing and information for the whole family.

Helping Hands Outreach is holding the health fair, at it's office and clinic, located near the entrance to Lakeview Estates, at 1733 Lake Rockaway Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17. The clinic is asking people to bring a canned to the health fair that will be donated to the local food bank.

The Conyers-based non-profit organization has held other health fairs throughout the year that focused on children's health issues, such as childhood obesity. This time around, Helping Hands President Janice Morris said the health fair will be geared toward the holiday season. Low-income families or those without health insurance are encourage to come.

"We know during the holidays we see an increase of incidence of diabetes and hypertension due to stress," Morris said. "Also, having access to health care may be more difficult this time the year as folks are worried about buying presents or just working to make ends this time of the year."

The health fair will have free screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and vision. Screenings will also be performed for mammogram and dental referrals to specialized providers.

Also, basic information on seasonal influenza will be available. Aid Gwinnett will provide free HIV testing, Morris said.

The clinic, which Morris operates with her husband, Tolbert Morris, has grown significantly since it opened in 2006.

Now, the clinic is open for three days out of the week, but Morris said they are continuously seeking volunteer medical professionals, donations and supplies.

Those who need a free health clinic can visit Helping Hands by appointments only. Primary care appointments are seen 2 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays of each month and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Appointments can be made by calling 770-860-9545.

Walk-ins are welcome for diabetic and hypertension screenings that are done from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesdays.
