COVINGTON -- Eastside wrestling team met one of its first goals by winning the Newton Cup.
Not only did they win the cup, the Eagles won it without leaving any doubt who was the best team in the county this year.
Eastside took care of Newton in quick fashion with a 51-30 win. Its win over the former cup holder, Alcovy, was an even more resounding victory over the Tigers 58-18.
"It was one of our goals. We got second last year and we wanted to win it this year. We wanted to win and improve off of last year," said Eastside head coach Earl Larimer. "I'm very proud of how they wrestled. They got it done."
Of Eastside's 14 wrestlers, eight won both of their matches, including Tyler Bailey (120-pound weight class), Rodrick Boley (113), Misha Felton (126), Patrick Cochran (132), Kevin Thompson (152), Jacob Wilder (160), Alex Davis (220) and Tyler Campbell.
Winning all their matches for Newton were Jamontavious Belcher (106), Dale Warren (170), Jeremy Fuller (182) and Alfa Fornan (195).
While having more than half of the wrestlers winning all of their matches is impressive, it's not a goal that Larimer had in mind.
"You really don't have numbers in mind. You just hope that guys come out, get it done and win. I really don't sit around thinking about who will win both or go 1-1. I just know that if we come out and wrestle hard every match and everyone puts everything out in every match we'd win the majority of them and get it done," Larimer said.
"We're trying to work hard to peak for team region. We're getting better but we still have improvements we have to make. But it's all about peaking for early January. One of our goals is to make it to team state in Macon. That's huge for us."
