COVINGTON -- The Christmas spirit was forgotten at the Dollar Tree on Ga. Highway 142 Friday afternoon when two shoppers came to blows over a buggy.
Warrants were taken for Cynthia Denise Smiley, who was charged with simple battery, disorderly conduct and cruelty to children in the second degree.
According to a Covington Police Department incident report, an altercation occurred after Smiley accused a woman of taking her buggy and then allegedly became angry enough to slap her and push her into a display and onto the floor.
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. when Smiley allegedly approached a woman who was looking at coffee mugs and asked if she took her buggy. The woman told her she did not and continued shopping.
But the incident report states the victim and witnesses said Smiley "began cursing ... and leaned over down next to (the victim's) ear and began to yell at her about the buggy."
As the victim tried to get away from Smiley, the report states, "Smiley drew back her right arm and slapped (the victim) with an open hand on the left side of her face, knocking her back. Then Smiley pushed (the victim) with both hands across the aisle and to the ground. As (the victim) tried to get up, Smiley pushed her again. During this assault, Smiley broke (the victim's) glasses valued at $315."
When the officer began to question Smiley, she told him "she was the primary aggressor," and admitted pushing the victim, but said after that she did not know what happened except the victim hit her in the head.
Witnesses identified Smiley as the aggressor and said the victim appeared to be trying to get away from her.
