Walk of Heroes plans flag disposal ceremony

CONYERS -- The Walk of Heroes Foundation is seeking old, worn out United States flags for a flag disposal service to be held at the Veterans Memorial Park in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Tommy Clack, chairman of the Walk of Heroes Foundation and area service manager for the Georgia Department of Veteran Services, said flags will be accepted from the public now through Wednesday. Drop off locations are the Veterans Services office at the J.P. Carr Community Services Building at 981 Taylor St. and the American Legion Post 77 at 764 Legion Road, both in Conyers.

The ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Georgia Veterans War Memorial, inside Black Shoals Park in north Rockdale County. The park is located at 3001 Black Shoals Road.

The collected flags will be disposed of in accordance to the ceremony adopted by the American Legion in 1937, which is based on the U.S. Flag Code. Clack said many Americans are not aware of the proper disposal of U.S. flags.

"We've never tried to do this in public, so we're all going to learn from this," Clack said. "To me, with the flag being attacked on Dec. 7, you know, you attack America when you attack the American flag, so here's an opportunity to show how to properly honor the flag when it's no longer usable."

The ceremony consists of two lines of individuals at attention, standing 20 feet apart and facing each other. Officers conducting the ceremony are at one end of the columns with a small fire.

According to the American Legion ceremony, the sergeant-at-arms advances toward the officers with the flags and presents them for disposal by fire. A prayer is said and the flags are then placed into the fire as Taps is played by a bugler.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony. Junior ROTC units and school groups from Rockdale and surrounding counties are also invited to attended the ceremony.
