CONYERS -- Local attorney Gary Washington recently announced he will seek election as the Rockdale County Superior Court judge in 2012.
A former senior attorney at the Fulton County Public Defender's Office, Washington joins attorneys Robert Mumford and Earnelle Winfrey in the non-partisan race to succeed Judge Sidney Nation, who is stepping down from the position after 20 years in office.
Washington said he wants to make the law "a better tool of justice" and promises fair treatment to everyone who comes before him.
"Several factors affected my decision to run for Rockdale County Superior Court judge. Chief among them is my passion for fairness and justice in the courtroom and my belief that everyone receive equal treatment under the law," he said.
Washington has been in private practice since 1995 and has 23 years experience as a lawyer. He has worked as a staff attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Washington is also an instructor at the National Criminal Defense College, Mercer Law School in Macon. He is a member of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Georgia Bar Association and the NewRock Legal Society.
Washington volunteers with the Salem High School Volleyball Booster Club and the Salem High School PSTA. He is a member of the Antioch Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church and the NAACP.
