COVINGTON — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a lone sunglass-wearing gunman who held up the Subway restaurant at 55 Crowell Road on Monday night.

Lt. Tyrone Oliver said the suspect, described as a slender-built, light-skinned black man, entered the restaurant at about 7:20 p.m. Two female employees were the only other occupants of the restaurant.

“He entered the store and stayed in there several minutes, and actually ordered something to eat,” Oliver said. “At the time he was asked to pay for the sandwiches is when he brandished a weapon and demanded money.”

Oliver said the suspect was armed with a black semiautomatic handgun. Video surveillance tape from the restaurant showed he was wearing a blue sweatshirt, a blue and white scarf and a blue skull cap. The suspect is believed to be in his early to mid-20s.

Oliver said the gunman took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register. He fled through the rear of the store. No one was injured in the incident.

The employees secured the restaurant and called 911, Oliver said, and officers arrived on the scene quickly.

“We set up a perimeter, after first ensuring the safety of the employees, and a K9 came out and attempted to get a track of the individual who left the scene,” Oliver said.

He added that it appeared that the suspect had an accomplice in a vehicle waiting outside the rear of the restaurant to help him get away.
