Sarah Beachy and Wesley Armstrong, both nursing students from Monroe, got their car decals from Lauren Ellington in the public safety office at GPC on Monday morning before their classes began.
COVINGTON -- Georgia Perimeter College was the first college in Newton County to begin classes this week.
Students at Oxford College began moving in last week, and their classes begin on Wednesday. DeKalb Technical College's classes begin Monday.
According to GPC, more than 2,600 are enrolled at GPC's Newton Campus this semester. That figure is up 2.3 percent over the same day last year.
For all of GPC's campuses -- which include ones in Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody and Newton, as well as an Alpharetta center -- the total number of students enrolled is more than 23,000, which is up 3.4 percent compared to last year.
The Newton Campus is located at 239 Cedar Lane, off Ga. Highway 11, in Covington.
GPC is the third-largest institution in the University System of Georgia.
Of the more than 750 dual enrollment students enrolled at GPC, 146 currently are attending the Newton Campus, which generally serves students in the Newton, Rockdale, Walton and Morgan county schools. In the program, students can take classes at the GPC campus while they are enrolled and also taking classes at their high school, earning credits toward graduation at both the college and high school levels.
Additionally, about 60 students are enrolled in the Move On When Ready dual enrollment program in which they attend GPC full time.
Earlier this year, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved GPC and three other Georgia two-year colleges to offer four-year bachelor's degrees.
Once the accrediting agencies give the go-ahead after an undisclosed time period, GPC will begin to offer a bachelor of arts in Sign Language Interpreting and a bachelor of science in Health Informatics, and more could be added in the future, college officials have said. Classes can be taken online and at a GPC campus.
Fall classes continue at GPC until Dec. 6.
More information about GPC is available by visiting its website, www.gpc.edu, or calling the Newton Campus at 770-278-1200.
