COVINGTON -- Three inmates at the Newton County Detention Center are now facing drug charges in connection with contraband found at the facility.
According to Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Keith Crum, Danta Ray Myles, Kendrick Darnell Hurst and Kenneth Terrell Washington were charged with possession of marijuana and possession of dangerous drugs in connection with an incident that occurred on Aug. 16.
Crum said between 7 and 8 p.m. a detention deputy noticed the odor of cigarette smoke and reported it.
An investigation ensued and two cells were searched and "a green leafy substance" was found, two pills and partial razor blades, Crum said. It was determined the leafy substance was marijuana and the pills were of the same type that Myles is prescribed.
"A lot of times when they're given medicine, they pretend to take it and don't swallow it and secret it away," Crum said. "Contraband is always a problem because we have inmates coming to us from other facilities."
All three of the charged inmates recently came from other facilities -- Myles was from Autry State Prison; Hurst came from Ware State Prison; and Washington was from Wheeler State Prison.
"In this instance we identified the problem, action was taken and the contraband was confiscated," Crum said.
