COVINGTON -- The median crossover on U.S. Highway 278 at Hazelbrand Road will be permanently closed beginning Wednesday, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The closing is part of an ongoing $15 million project being paid for through stimulus funds. The project includes the widening of Ga. Highway 142 from south of U.S. Highway 278 to Industrial Blvd. Ga. Highway 142 will be widened to four 12-foot lanes with a 44-foot raised median and 12-foot shoulders with curb and gutter and a 5-foot sidewalk.
The project length along Ga. 142 is 1.11 miles. The project also includes the widening of 1 mile along U.S. 278, mile in each direction of the Ga. 142 intersection, to provide capacity and operational improvements for the intersection. U.S. 278 will be widened to six 12-foot lanes with a 20-foot raised median and 12-foot shoulders with curb and gutter and a 5-foot sidewalk.
The project got underway in January 2010 and is slated to be completed by Oct. 31, 2012.
