Cross country season set to begin with Spalding meet

The season begins soon for the three Rockdale County cross country teams. This weekend Heritage and Rockdale open the year making their annual trip to the Jag Invitational on Saturday at Spalding High School.

A number of teams are expected to attend the annual event, including Newton High School. Salem's cross country teams don't hit the course until Sept. 10 when the Seminoles travel to Eagle's Landing High School for the Battle of Atlanta. The race, which is also expected to include Rockdale, will be held at Nash Farms Battlefield in McDonough.

Drish, Young set to go for Jaguars, Bears

While most college soccer teams in the southeast have yet to release their complete rosters and schedules, the University of South Alabama and Mercer University are ready to go. South Alabama and sophomore goalkeeper and former Heritage star Melissa Drish will begin their season Friday at Louisiana Tech, then play Sunday in their home opener against Southern. Drish played 20 games, starting 18 as a freshman in 2010 and made 127 saves. From Mercer, Young, a sophomore defensive midfielder from Rockdale, will help the Bears begin their season Friday against Jacksonville State in Macon. Stay tuned to the Citizen all year for collegiate updates from former county athletes.
