PORTERDALE -- Another candidate has announced she will run for the Porterdale City Council in the upcoming election.

Anita Rainey will seek the Post 1 seat, currently held by Robert Foxworth.

"I've been attending meetings and becoming involved since I moved to Porterdale a little over a year ago, and so many of my friends and neighbors are encouraging me to run," Rainey said of her decision. "I think I can do some good."

Rainey is already busy with civic endeavors. She is president and project manager for the Porterdale Community Garden Club and is a founding member of the Porterdale Lending Library. She was recently appointed to the Downtown Development Authority.

She said she sees several challenges ahead for Porterdale.

"I think with the economy the way it is, just keeping the city viable is a challenge. Hopefully, we can improve a little bit on that," she said.

She said she sees the comprehensive plan as a key to Porterdale's future.

"I am eager to begin on all facets of the comprehensive plan, from attracting business and industry to Porterdale to developing it as a recreational destination," she said.

One of her goals when elected would be to address quality of life issues for residents, and said she felt the establishment of the library and the farmer's market at the Depot were steps in the right direction.

Rainey said she felt her organizational background combined with enthusiasm and integrity will enhance her ability to participate in the redevelopment and growth of Porterdale.

She is originally from Minnesota and moved to Georgia in 1983, living in the Newton/Rockdale area. Rainey, 53, became a resident of Porterdale in 2010. She has three grown children and is employed as a comptroller at Town and Country Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Conyers.
