The Newton County Sheriff's Office is looking into what they are calling "a suspicious death" after the discovery of skeletal remains off Riverfront Road in Porterdale.
According to NCSO Lt. Tyrone Oliver, two fishermen discovered what was left of the body around 1:20 a.m. Saturday and notified authorities. Oliver said the remains were on a bank in a wooded area near the Yellow River. He said the area was known to be a fishing spot, however, the remains were in a location not easily accessed. Oliver said remains had been sent to the GBI crime lab in hopes of ascertaining cause of death or any other pertinent information. He estimated the body had been at the location "several months at least," and declined to release at this time whether it had been a male or female. "There are no identifying features. Only clothes," he said. He said a search of the area surrounding where the body was located was being conducted Saturday morning and more details would be released as they became available.More like this story
