COVINGTON -- It's never too early to start learning about taking care of Mother Earth.

The Learning Center and Montessori School of Covington are offering parents a chance to interact with their children and teach them a valuable lesson about protecting the planet at the same time. The organizations are hosting Earth Day for Little Ones from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at the Montessori School, located in Clark's Grove off Clark Street.

Children ages 2 to 8 and their parents are invited to attend and learn how to practice the four R's -- reduce, reuse, recycle and renew. They will participate in activities such as making photo frames with natural and recyclable materials, learning about compost, reading "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss, decorating a flower pot and playing games to learn the difference between recyclables and trash. Activities will be modified based on the child's age and abilities.

Earth Day for Little Ones is one of a series of activities called Quality Time events sponsored by the organizations on a smaller scale each month.

"The goal is to provide an environment where parents can interact with very young children so learning occurs in nurturing relationships with adults," said Learning Center Executive Director Mollie Melvin. "Not every parent necessarily knows how to set up activities young children enjoy and learn from. That's something we can do. We try to find ways to enrich the learning environment in the home ... the real emphasis is engaging with children directly rather than using an intermediary such as a computer. They can be exploratory and the parent has the opportunity to respond and give them information at the time. With electronics, it's one-way."

Volunteers from Oxford College and Newton County 4-H will be on hand to assist.

Ticket prices for the event are $7 for the first child, $5 for the second and $3 for the third. Children under age 2 are free. Tickets can be purchased at Square Perk Cafe on the Square or, to reserve a space and pay on the day of the event, email mollie@leapintobooks.org. For more information, contact Melvin at 404-314-2615.
