Career academy to open sooner than expected
COVINGTON -- A plan that began in 1998 will come to fruition sooner than expected. Officials at the Newton County School System announced Tuesday that its Newton College & Career Academy will open in the fall, rather than the original opening of January 2012.

Covington Lions Club member Jimmy Williams makes sure the wood is not wet for today's Chicken Barbecue set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Academy Springs Park Pavilion on Conyers Street. Cooking will have taken place throughout the previous night to ensure the 3,200 chicken halves which will be on sale until 7 p.m. will be ready for feasting. Tickets are $7 each and can be purchased at the park. Plates include a half chicken, cole slaw, bread, chips and iced tea. Desserts are available for a donation. A drive-thru pick-up will be available at the Legion Hall parking lot across the street. Orders of 25 plates or more for businesses can be delivered. Call 770-860-1414 to place an order. Proceeds from the annual fundraiser will benefit Georgia Lighthouse Foundation and other Lions charities.
