COVINGTON -- Mayfield Hardware Company in Covington is doing its part to help local nonprofits during hard economic times. The company is sponsoring The Helpful Chair-ity Event, a raffle of 20 custom painted chairs to benefit 20 organizations.
"We had chairs left over from last season. I was doing inventory and I saw them and said, 'You know what would really sell these chairs would be for them to be painted.' It started off like that," said owner Kendra Mayfield.
The idea grew from there, and she decided to let local charities paint the chairs and then raffle them off, with proceeds benefiting the charities.
Each chair is painted to reflect the charity's mission or theme or name. For example, the Covington Lions Club chair bears a lion, while Relay for Life boasts a birthday cake in recognition of this year's theme of celebrating more birthdays for cancer survivors.
"We would like to raise money for these organizations and it will be divided equally, but the focus is on educating the community about these helpful places in our community and what people are doing out there. There's a lot of press about how depressed our county is economically and in times like these people rely on these organizations to do good things, and they are," Mayfield said.
The chairs are on display in various locations throughout town, but can all be viewed on Mayfield's Facebook page. Winners won't be able to bid on a particular chair; it's the luck of the draw which one you get, Mayfield said, but added that the chairs can be donated to the nonprofit organization that painted it if the winner chooses.
The raffle will take place on Saturday throughout the day at Mayfield's. Raffle tickets will be sold until the last chair is handed out. Tickets are one for $5; six for $25; 15 for $50; 25 for $75 or 40 for $100.
Proceeds will be divided evenly between the following organizations:
