COVINGTON -- They call it "Georgia's greatest little town," and to prove it, folks in Social Circle say they are planning a big event for Oct. 8.
Mars Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 387 W. Hightower Trail in the historic district, will host a job fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to event coordinator Dede deMarks.
"Over 15 employers will be on site, so we're expecting a crowd," deMarks said. "We hope people will come out and bring their resumes. You never know what blessings are out there or what God can do until we present ourselves ready."
The event is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor and is under the direction of Jessica Jenkins of the Monroe Career Center.
"Pastor George Hill is leading our efforts at Mars Hill Baptist. This is an extension of the pastor's vision for the church to reach out in love to one another," deMarks said, adding that the current economic crisis has touched church members as well as community members.
"We're all affected, but one of the things our church is blessed with is that we are in a central location in the heartbeat of the Social Circle Historic District," she said, adding that they saw the location as easily accessible to residents of east metro Atlanta.
Among the employers who will have representatives at the site and will be accepting employment applications are: Goodyear Tire and Rubber; Angel Food Ministries, Apollo Staffing, Wagner Service Solutions; Amici Italian Cafe; A Premium Healthcare Solution LLC; SmartStyle Hair Salon; Tupperware; American General Life and Accident Insurance Company; and Athens Community Council on Aging.
The city of Social Circle is enthusiastically supporting this effort, according to deMarks.
"The city is involved in helping us and will provide whatever resources they can provide. City Manager Doug White said he is excited about this and he's extending public safety support for traffic in getting in and out of the church," deMarks said. "Also, school will be out that day and they have offered their activity parking lot in case it's needed."
The church is located four-tenths of a mile off Ga. Highway 11. Turn at the traffic light in the center of town onto West Hightower Trail.
