Rotary to showcase old cars

COVINGTON -- The Rotary Club of Covington will showcase cars from yesteryear at its 18th annual Cars of the Past Covington Car Show from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3.

The event is a fundraiser for Rotary and its community causes, such as the Empty Stocking Fund, which provides toys to needy children at Christmas time. Last year's event, with 300 participants and 3,000 spectators, raised $7,000, all of which was donated to The Miracle League of Newton County.

The show is for "any vehicle over 25 years old. This is strictly an older car, antique car event," said organizer Lanier Sims. "It's been a long-time tradition. This is the 18th year of the show. It's one of the biggest outside of Atlanta and one of the biggest in the entire state from what I've heard. We'll have cars from as far away as Augusta to north Georgia."

Trophies will be awarded to the top 100 cars and 10 best of trophies will be awarded, including Best of Show, Rotary Pick of Show, Best Custom and Best Original.

The registration fee is $20 for those who register prior to Oct. 1 and $25 for those who register the day of the show.

The event is free to the public. Local vendors, including the new downtown coffee shop, Square Perk, and Bradley's Bar-B-Que, will sell food. A 50-50 raffle will also be held; for $1, anyone can purchase a ticket and the winner will receive half the raffle pot, with the other half going to Rotary. Last year's winner got $250.
