COVINGTON -- If you want to get involved in Newton County Relay for Life 2011, now's the time to start preparing. The kickoff event for Relay for Life will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Eastside High School cafeteria. The high school is located at 10245 Eagle Drive.
"Everybody is welcome to come to the kickoff, if you've been on a team or not, and just see what it's all about," said Beth Bradley, Newton County Relay for Life committee member.
The event is free and will include dinner and a presentation on how to raise money for the big event, set for April 29 at the Church at Covington. This year's goal is to raise $240,000, with participation of 70 teams and 1,000 individuals. The theme this year is "Cruisin' for a Cure."
"It's a good way to learn more about how to get involved and start making a difference and get important information. There will be team packets handed out," Bradley said of the kickoff. Information on how to register a team and survivor activities will also be discussed.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's largest fundraiser. The all-night walk/run held each year in April is the culmination of fundraising efforts that take place locally year-round. In Newton County, Relay season runs Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.
"This community is very, very Relay oriented," Bradley said, noting that every school in the county participated in the last two events.
