31 apply for open principal position

COVINGTON -- The Newton County School System hopes to select a permanent principal for Newton High School by Sept. 21.

On Friday, Superintendent Gary Mathews sent out an e-mail to NHS colleagues announcing that 31 candidates have applied for the open NHS principal position from which Roderick Sams resigned on Sept. 1 for unspecified personal reasons.

Mathews said a screening committee will determine who and how many candidates will be interviewed this week. Interviews of finalists are scheduled for Monday.

He said the final nominee will be presented for approval to the Newton County Board of Education for action during its September board meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 in the board room at the Newton County BOE building at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington.

The system is following the Administrative Procedures for Screening and Interviewing Candidates for Principal, procedures that were effective July 15 and used in the selection of the new principals at Clements Middle and Livingston Elementary earlier this year, Mathews said.

The procedures call for the superintendent, deputy superintendent, associate superintendent, the director of elementary or secondary education and a human resources representative to handle the screening process. Ideally, there will be between three and seven top candidates to go before an interview committee.

Although the committee will collaborate to decide the top candidate, the superintendent will make the ultimate decision, according to the procedures.
