COVINGTON -- After Saturday's Fuzz Run, residents are invited to the seventh annual Newton County Literacy Festival.
From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the event will return to the Covington Square sponsored by The Learning Center and Main Street Covington and centered around International Literacy Day on Wednesday.
"There is something for everyone in the family," said Mollie Melvin, executive director of The Learning Center.
The event features giveaways, family-centered organizations hosting interactive games and crafts for children and live entertainment sponsored by the Arts Association in Newton County with Scott Douglas performing "Shake, Rattle & Roll" at 11 a.m., as well as other performers throughout the day.
The event also will include the fourth annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival, sponsored by the Southern Heartland Art Guild -- artists will begin their work at 10 a.m. and must have it completed by 1 p.m. for judging.
Additionally, Oxford resident Erik Oliver, a local author, will present and sign his latest book, "Kid Cavalier on a Halloween Quest," which is available for purchase at Mayfield Ace Hardware.
Last year's event attracted about 800 guests, and even more are expected this year.
"It has grown every year," Melvin said.
It is free and open to the public.
