Covington man gets 20 years in mop attack
DOTHAN, Ala. -- A Georgia man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including hitting an Alabama prison guard with a mop.
Henry County, Ala., court clerk Shirline Vickers told the Dothan Eagle that 19-year-old Antonio Marvette Bell of Covington admitted to five felony charges, including first-degree receiving stolen property, first-degree escape, second-degree escape, second-degree assault and promoting prison contraband.
The assault charge came from what sheriff's officials said was an attack on a corrections officer with a mop stick after Bell reported a spill in his jail cell. He had been in jail since July 2009 on weapons and theft charges.
