COVINGTON -- Area artists will be in the spotlight later this month when Southern Heartland Arts Inc. hosts the third annual Artful Harvest Juried Art Exhibit.
The exhibit will run Thursday through Sept. 29 in the meeting room of the Newton County Library, located at 7116 Floyd St., and is free and open to the public.
All Georgia artists are invited to participate. Art will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the library. The cost to enter is $15 for guild members and $25 for non-guild members. Applications can be obtained at Southern Heartland Art Gallery, located at 1132 Monticello St., or online at www.southernheartlandart.com.
Art will be judged in two categories: 3-D and 2-D, with 3-D including sculpture, turned wood, stained glass, pottery and clay; and 2-D including photography, water color, pastel and other wall hung art.
A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 16, where prizes will be awarded. Three prizes will be handed out in each category and an overall best of show will be named and receive a $500 cash prize. The judge for the exhibit is Atlanta artist Charles Young Walls.
The exhibit is sponsored by United Bank and is chaired by local artist Linda Pflug.
"It's to bring awareness of visual arts to our community and it really is part of our mission statement," said Southern Heartland Finance Chair Susan Wahl. "Our mission statement is to involve and educate our community in the visual arts, with emphasis on appreciation of fine arts through instructional programs, educational scholarships and the exhibition of fine art for community view. Also, our guild members don't really have that many places to show their art. This is the one time a year all these 160-plus members have the opportunity to show their art."
