"Hello Newton County! Taxpaying citizen here. Just wondering why it is one must pass a drug screen to get a job but not to receive state benefits? Wouldn't that save so much money? Or create more benefits for those who really need/deserve it? I mean really ... if one can buy drugs, then they can certainly buy their own food, clothing and insurance. Just saying ... "

"It is very unfortunate to read the parent comments regarding EHS football. Obviously, these parents are too gutless to take their concerns up with the coaching staff. It sounds as though a "little league parent" can't handle their son not being good enough, or, more likely, not having a good enough attitude to play there. Gee, I wonder where they might be developing these attitudes? EHS coaches don't have to justify their decisions to anyone. Their record will do that just fine. And, just for the record, I do not have a child at Eastside. Now, go talk to the coaches and spare us your weekly whining."

"Here I am again, begging you all to vote for new blood to all elected offices. Vote for the candidate who has never before been in politics, or at least the youngest, regardless of party affiliation. It's time to clean house and this is the only way! Especially in Newton County. It is time to run the old junkyard farmers and flossie girls out of office so our county can finally move into the current century!"

"To the reader who said ‘Listen up seniors: Obama and his Congress are not giving seniors another Social Security raise,' they have nothing to do with it — it has been a law since 1975. You need to quit listening to people like Darrell Huckaby and Nat Harwell who have nothing but disdain for anything Up North or Yankees and the Obama administration. and yet have a pretense of good gospel people. There are actually good honest columnists who tell the truth and know their facts and do not write a hypocritical column for their view only."

"Sure, right ... cause it's only the wealthy that create jobs. I wish people would stop to think before they assume that only the wealthy create jobs. That has got to be the lie of the century."

"To the person who last week commented about whites being discriminated against ... Bravo sir/madam, bravo. You hit the nail on the head. Too often do people of one race think they should have something just because of their race. Ever heard of a college claiming to be a ‘black' college? I have. Ever heard of a college claiming to be a ‘white' college? Nope, that would be racist! Ever heard a black comedian make jokes about whites? I have ... and blacks think it's hilarious! Ever heard a white comedian make jokes about blacks? I have ... and he is branded a racist. Too often people of non-white races play the race card and make themselves look like a victim. It's disgusting. I could go on, but all that is going to happen is next week some person is going to make a comment about how 30 years ago their parents suffered from some type of racism. Wake up people, it's 2010 and racism is almost gone from this society. Oh wait, this one time, at band camp, someone called you the ‘N' word. No ****, I said it was almost gone from this world, it is nothing like some of you are making it out to be. Grow up. Don't blame others because you failed at something. Quit blaming anyone other than yourself that you did something and got in trouble for it."

"I guess it is OK if we spend recreation dollars on more softball fields. Sure, we only have a couple hundred now, why would we ever think of spending those dollars on bike paths, Frisbee golf, water parks, etc. Other counties (who all surround Newton) understand that residents have varied interests and aren't all softball players."

"‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.' There have been a lot of statements this week about the first amendment. The first paragraph if you did not know is the 1st amendment. Take a minute and think about it. Without it we would not have this newspaper, the local church, the right to disagree with the government. Be very careful when you try to discredit or misrepresent one part. Without these basic few words our freedoms are worthless. And we may disagree (but) we still have the right to express our opinions even if they are ridiculous. These words have served us well for over 200 years. And the next time you see a person in military service thank them. They are the ones who put their lives on the line for just a few words for you and me."

"Rails to trails: Another scam? Rails to trails is possibly a way for certain insiders to get control of the railroad. With the new ‘Inland Port' rail system being built by the state of Georgia, this railroad could become a northbound freight line for numerous products. Strange thing; several years ago two of these insiders were going all around the county trying to buy large tracts of land adjoining the railroad. Think they want to put up snow cone stands beside the walking trail? Certainly not on 30-50 acre tracts! A local citizen behind the rails to trails owns, along with his family, 50 acres within several blocks of the Square. How is it zoned? C-1, for warehouses? Others have been grabbing up rail-adjacent properties, and not for the reason you may think. This whole scam may just be a way for the taxpayers to buy the railroad with tax money and these insiders to gain access to control and utilize the rail for a huge warehouse industry to accommodate an Inland Port facility or facilities. There is always an ulterior motive, or things are never as they seem. Suckered again."

"I read a recent (letter to the editor) stating that the movie production crews, who film in Covington, are really not helping the local economy since they do not eat, stay or spend money here. My question back to Covington would be ‘why would they?' Newton County offers very little choice when it comes to restaurants and most people do not want to stay where they cannot eat. Also, there is almost a total lack of recreational opportunities, such as safe areas to run or bike. We do not have any clothing stores for them to patronize. And, Covington does not have a movie theatre, bowling alley, or any other entertainment option. When I travel for my job, I stay where I know there are things to do when I am not ‘working.' Oftentimes that requires a drive to neighboring areas from my jobsite. The production crews are doing the exact same thing. If you want visitors to spend money in Covington, you must give them outlets to do so."
