CONYERS -- Fifteen Georgia high school marching bands will perform at the same event in Rockdale County this weekend.
In an event that Rockdale County High School has sponsored since 1977, RCHS will play host to the 33rd Annual Greater Atlanta Marching Festival. Performances are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday and end after the 8:10 p.m. performance by the RCHS marching band; contest awards are scheduled to begin at 8:40 p.m.
"I know a lot of people will be out in town for the fall festival, so if they can stop by, they will enjoy some great bands," RCHS band director Scott Stanton said. "It's a great opportunity for them to come out and see some additional marching bands. This is another chance to see a variety of bands outside of the county."
This year, about 1,000 band students from metro Atlanta and north Georgia will compete and perform at Reid Stadium, which is located at 1174 Bulldog Circle in Conyers.
Area marching bands -- including those from Columbus, Hall County, Monroe, Henry County, Jasper County, Jackson County and Madison County -- will perform from 2 to 8 p.m. as part of the festival's competition. The RCHS band is scheduled to perform as an exhibition -- they will be evaluated, but they are not part of the competition.
The event costs $8 for those 13 years old and older; $5 for children ages 4 to 12 and is free for children under 4 years old.
Concessions and souvenirs also will be sold at the event. A donation to the Rockdale County food bank will earn a guest a $1 program.
