COVINGTON -- A Covington man has been arrested and charged with rape in connection with an incident that occurred at the Salem Terrace apartment complex on Oct. 2, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Michael Anthony Preston, 45, of 10706 Magnolia Heights Circle, has been charged with rape, possession of a firearm while trying to commit a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Courtney Morrison said deputies were dispatched to the apartment complex, located near the intersection of Salem and Kirkland roads where a 19-year-old woman told them she had been raped that evening.
Morrison said the woman said between 10:30 and 11 p.m., Preston, who was a former neighbor living at the complex, arrived at her apartment.
"When she opened the door, he walked in uninvited," Morrison said. "She asked him to leave and he refused. She made another attempt to get him to leave saying she needed to tend to her baby who was sleeping."
Morrison said the woman said she left the room and he followed her into the bedroom where he assaulted her, threatening her with the firearm.
The woman was at the apartment alone with the baby at the time of the alleged incident. The suspect immediately left the scene following the assault and was arrested on Oct. 6.
