Police say woman's death is 'suspicious'

COVINGTON -- The Covington Police Department is investigating the death of a woman found dead Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area off Washington Street.

According to Capt. Craig Treadwell, the CPD was notified around 4 p.m. that an employee of Mosley Electric Company, located at 7189 Washington St., had discovered a body at a makeshift campsite in a wooded area behind the business.

Treadwell said late Wednesday night that it was a "suspicious" death.

"We're not ruling anything out and are investigating it just like a homicide," he said, adding that the identity of the woman was still pending as well as notification of next of kin.

Treadwell said the body is believed to be that of a white female and due to the condition of the body it would be difficult to estimate how long the woman had been dead. He said more information would be forthcoming pending autopsy results, which he expects to reveal the manner and cause of death.

The body was transported by Coroner Tommy Davis to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Treadwell said it appeared that someone had been living at the campsite where the body was found and there was another campsite nearby, but it appeared to have been abandoned.

Anyone who may have information concerning this case is asked to call the CPD at 770-786-7605.
