COVINGTON -- Newton County authorities are still searching for clues that will lead them to a suspect in the death of a 29-year-old Atlanta man whose body was found Sept. 28 in a wooded area off Piper Road.
The body of Wendell Ronard Barber, also known as Pumpkin or "P," was found by a hunter. Newton County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tyrone Oliver said at the time investigators believed the body was dumped about five days before it was discovered. Foul play is suspected.
According to a press release from the NCSO and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Barber was last seen on Sept. 21 in Midtown Atlanta.
"Mr. Barber was known to frequent Bulldogs Night Club, Piedmont Park and Club 91," the press release states.
Investigators have so far established no ties between the victim and Newton County, but because of the remote location -- "all the way at the end of Piper Road" -- Oliver said it is suspected the person who dumped the body was somewhat familiar with the area, pointing out that it is not easily accessible from I-20 and would be difficult for a person who doesn't know Newton County to locate.
Piper Road runs off Ga. Highway 36 and the area where the body was found is an undeveloped section that backs into a subdivision, Oliver said.
Oliver said authorities do not know if the murder actually took place in Newton County or if the body was simply dumped in the area.
