COVINGTON -- There's a lot going on in downtown Covington this October.
Octoberfest kicks off Thursday, continuing through Oct. 23, and will be celebrated with special events throughout the downtown district and special promotions and discounts offered by local merchants and restaurants.
"The last quarter of the year is always an exciting time, and this year the merchants have taken it up to a new level as they offer some exciting dining and shopping experiences in the downtown district as part of the newly created Octoberfest Celebration," Main Street Covington Director Josephine Kelly said. "Many of the activities are focused on Thursdays and Saturdays with the Family Film Festival taking place on the evening of Oct. 22. As one of the merchants noted, it is Fall Break and so many of our families are taking a 'staycation.' We want to make sure that the downtown is a destination for them during the break."
Every Thursday, merchants will extend shopping hours until 8 p.m., with many stores hosting trunk shows and special events and McKibben Music bringing music to the streets in the evenings.
Among those having special events is Brendale's, which is hosting the Think Pink Pandora Trunk Show from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Thursday. The event will feature refreshments and door prizes, including a drawing for a Pandora charm bracelet. Throughout the month, a portion of proceeds from sales of Not Your Daughters Jeans special pink edition Hayden jean will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. Also, $2 for every pair of jeans tried on will be donated to support the foundation. T-shirts and other special items will be available to promote breast cancer awareness.
Spires Interiors and Gifts will host a Pretty in Pink P.J. Party Thursday, offering a discount on select robes and gowns and handing out gift bags to customers who make a purchase.
On Thursday and on Oct. 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tropical Nails will feature after-market samples and one-of-a-kind designer handbags from The Bag Lady, with a portion of profits to benefit the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
Restaurants offering special discounts and promotions include Amici Italian Cafe; Bradley's Bar-B-Que; Freeman's Low Country Fish Camp; Plain Nuts Catering; R.L.'s Off the Square; and Square Perk Cafe.
On Saturday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Main Street Covington and McKibben Music will present Octoberfest Blues and Bluegrass Jam Session. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in the jam session featuring the Biggers Family Band and friends.
"We are so fortunate to have so many talented local musicians, and they are all invited to come and join in on something that we would like to make a tradition in the downtown," Kelly said.
Also this Saturday and on Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Church Street Antique Market will host its annual Appraisal Fair. The public is invited to bring antiques for expert evaluation.
Other events this month include the Classic Family Film Festival on the Square Park at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" will be featured, along with other family-friendly black and white classics. The event is hosted by Main Street in conjunction with Outrageous Events.
Southern Heartland Art Guild will release its "Sweet Treat Cook Book" from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 during its Art, Melodies and Java event at the Southern Heartland Art Gallery on Monticello Street.
Also, the popular annual Mutt Show will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, on the Square Park, followed by an 11 a.m. Economic Smart Fair presented by the Chi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
