CONYERS -- Rockdale Career Academy hopes to bring more notoriety to its student programs with a communitywide activity.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the school, RCA will present its first Cruising for Careers Car Show.

"If you have a car to enter, that's great. But if we can get the community out here, it will support our sponsors, and I think they'll have a great time," said Stretch Brandenburg, the career automotive technician instructor at RCA and an organizer of the event.

The show will feature new and old, classic cars, hot rods -- "everything," he said.

Guests can enter in the classes GM cars and trucks, Ford cars and trucks, MOPAR cars and trucks, European cars, Asian cars and trucks and Rat Rods. Entries cost $20 each; registration is open until about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Judging, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will offer prizes to Best in Class, second and third in each class, Best in Show and People's Choice.

Sponsors Conyers Honda, Whitlow's Auto Repair & Performance, Automotive Fleet Repair, C.A.R.S. of Covington, NAPA Auto Parts, Year One and Auto Extremes also will be on site and bring out some vehicles. Conyers Honda will feature its new CR-Z sport hybrid car.

"You'll see everything, from hybrids to 800 horsepower race cars," Brandenburg said. "There will be a good variety."

Admission is free to the public; additional contributions will be accepted. Food will be available for purchase on site.

Brandenburg said proceeds will benefit RCA's student programs, mostly by bringing in supplies for classes at RCA. Programs at RCA include automotive, agricultural, construction, manufacturing, culinary arts, early childhood, medical, technology and others.

"Supplies and tools are things that we all need," he said. "There are things that you use up. ... This is a true technological high school with college-level courses where (the students) are put to work. They get to start building their careers while they are still in high school."

RCA students also are helping out at the event by designing flyers and trophies, assisting at the show and directing traffic and visitors during the show.
