Group to host ride for U.S. troops

CONYERS -- Operation Sandbox will hold its third annual Ride for the Troops and Classic Car Show on Saturday at Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson at 900 Dogwood Drive S.E. in Conyers.

The motorcycle ride and car show will raise money to pay for care packages to be sent to troops deployed overseas, as well as postage used to mail the packages.

"Whatever their needs are, we're going to go out and buy it and send it to them," Operation Sandbox founder Virginia Pearson said.

Registration for riders will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m., with the ride to begin at 11 a.m. The cost is $20 per driver and $10 for passengers. The first 200 riders will receive a T-shirt or event pin and a Chick-fil-A biscuit and Starbucks coffee.

A patriotic ceremony will kick off the ride, featuring the National Anthem, special guest speakers and the playing of Taps. As riders embark on their hour-long journey, everyone else will have the opportunity to view classic cars on display by Social Kruizers and enjoy entertainment provided by Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis impersonators, the Army Ground Forces Command Band from Fort McPherson and more. There will be raffles for money and prizes, including $500 and $250 gift certificates to Harley-Davidson and gift cards to local restaurants. The event will wrap up at about 4 p.m.

"The ride is going to be family friendly and will be videotaped to send in care packages for the troops to help boost morale ... Our troops are still over there, and let's not forget them," Pearson said.
