CONYERS -- Concerned residents gathered Thursday night in a town hall meeting to talk about solutions to local violent crimes and in hopes of preventing similar situations such as the two recent deaths.
More than 100 people packed the Rockdale Auditorium to hear from local leaders and state officials in response to the Nov. 11 and Nov. 14 violent crimes that resulted in two homicides and two juveniles injured from gunshots. The Nov. 11 shooting happened at the Conyers GameStop, where Adrian Snow, a Stone Mountain resident, walked in on an armed robbery and was shot. Snow later died from his injuries. A few days later, Rockdale County High School senior Dequavious Mapp died from gunshots fired into a crowd of young people at a local house party.
During Thursday's meeting, the public asked questions of law enforcement, judicial, government and education officials.
The meeting was also an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns about large parties, young people with guns and criminals coming from outside the county.
Several leaders, including Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Read, Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson and Rockdale County Sheriff Jeff Wigington said it was important for residents to be vigilant and report criminal activity.
There was also discussion of starting preventative measures from home with parents knowing where their children are and making sure they are not involved in potentially criminal activities.
