COVINGTON -- The roundabout at Turner Lake Road and Clark Street will open at 10 a.m. Nov. 30, the Georgia Department of Transportation has announced.
The roundabout is expected to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection. The DOT reminds motorists to yield at entry to traffic inside the roundabout and enter the roundabout with a right turn. All traffic circulates around the central island in a counterclockwise movement and makes a right turn to exit the roundabout.
Once the roundabout is opened, Old Clark Street, the current detour to downtown Covington, will be permanently closed.
Covington Transportation Manager Billy Skinner told the Citizen recently that the roundabout opening had been delayed because lights that were ordered in August had not arrived due to a manufacturer's error. Substitute lighting will be installed in the next few days and replaced when the appropriate lights are shipped, Skinner said.
The project also includes an underground lighted pedestrian tunnel leading to Turner Lake Park as well as sidewalks and street lights. Construction was funded through stimulus money.
