Morrow — Clayton State University has been notified by the University System of Georgia that Clayton State has been approved for exemption from the Regents' Test, effective immediately.

The Regents' Test is designed to certify the reading and writing competency of students seeking an associate's or bachelor's degree in the University System of Georgia. Students were previously required to take the Regents' Test the first semester they attended Clayton State and every subsequent semester until it was passed, unless they were exempt or in Learning Support English or Reading.

According to Dr. Robert Vaughan, Clayton State associate vice president for Academic Affairs, a subcommittee of retired USG presidents, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Susan Herbst, USG Chancellor Erroll Davis and Regent William H. NeSmith, chair of the Committee on Academic Affairs, all reviewed Clayton State's application and unanimously recommended its approval.

The reviewers noted that Clayton State University has a consistent track record of student success in past Regents' Test performance and that the University has instituted an effective assessment plan which will ensure that students achieve mastery of specified Communications learning outcomes.

"We want to express our sincere thanks to the (Clayton State) committee who prepared this application, particularly Dr. Barbara Goodman and Dr.

Mary Lamb, for all their hard work in helping us reach this milestone,"

said Vaughan.

As a result of the exemption, Regents' remedial classes have been removed from the Clayton State spring 2011 class schedule. In addition, the Clayton State Enrollment Management division is consulting with other USG institutions to determine the best way to indicate the exemption on student transcripts.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is a comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.
