COVINGTON -- Get ready to shake your groove thing for a good cause.

Washington Street Community Center will host its sixth annual casino night fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Nov. 13 at DeKalb Tech and this year's theme is Groovy Nights.

"It will be a '70s theme -- a fun, zany time. Everyone is asked to dress in '70s apparel," said Washington Street Executive Director Bea Jackson.

In addition to casino games, which revelers can play with fake money to win prizes, there will be dance and costume contests and a sweet shop featuring homemade goodies for sale.

"This gives us the opportunity to try and help ourselves and to basically be able to support the activities and programs and services offered by the center," Jackson said.

Washington Street is perhaps best known for its afterschool tutorial program, and also provides a variety of other activities for students, including theater and drama club, youth leadership development, a summer enrichment program and a fun and fitness program.

The goal is to raise $40,000 through the casino fundraiser from ticket sales and sponsorships.

"This is a wonderful way the community can support Washington Street and the efforts we are doing so we can continue to give the kind of quality programs and services that hopefully the community has become accustomed to," Jackson said.

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 770-786-4002. Tickets will be sold up until the evening of the event.
