COVINGTON -- Turner Lake Road will be closed beginning June 9 for up to 180 days for construction of a roundabout at its intersection with Clark Street, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced this week.
Traffic will be detoured using Washington Street/Ga. Highway 81 and West and Clark streets. Signs will be in place notifying motorists of the detour and barricades will be located at intersections prior to the closing.
Turner Lake Complex will be accessed via Old Clark Street and Clark Street.
City of Covington Transportation Manager Billy Skinner has said he hopes the contractor won't need the entire six months to complete the project.
In addition to the roundabout, the project includes an underground lighted pedestrian tunnel leading to Turner Lake Park as well as sidewalks and street lights.
The construction contract in the amount of $775,622 was awarded to J.J.E. Constructors Inc. of Atlanta. The project is under the supervision of the Georgia Department of Transportation and is paid for through stimulus funds. GDOT and city officials are asking motorists to pay extra attention and watch their speed as they drive near the project during the coming months, being mindful of the safety of workers.
