Schools on shortened summer schedule

COVINGTON — Students in the Newton County School System have completed their classes for the regular school year and soon the system will be operating under a shortened summer schedule.

After teachers and some other school staff participate in post-planning for the 2009-10 school year on Tuesday and Wednesday, many schools will close for the summer. Some may remain open at various times over the summer to house special summer programs, like CRCT makeups and credit recovery.

Additionally, the Newton County Board of Education office, located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington, soon will shorten its hours of operation for the public over the summer.

Beginning Tuesday and continuing until July 2, the central office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It will be closed on Fridays during this time.

After being closed on Monday, July 5, for observance of the Independence Day holiday on the previous Sunday, the office will resume its normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Parents will register new students at their assigned home school, as centralized registration is no longer in place due to budget cuts, according to Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations at NCSS.

The Newton County Board of Education will continue meeting over the summer. Board members have a work session scheduled for June 8 and a regular session meeting on June 15. In July, the board will hold a combined work session and meeting on July 20. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. in the board room of the Newton County BOE building, which also is located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington.

The board also plans to hold public meetings regarding the budget and millage rate on June 8 at 6 p.m., June 9 at 10:30 a.m. and June 15 at 6 p.m., as required by the Tax Payers Bill of Rights in the event of a millage rate increase.

Teachers and some staff will report back to schools for the 2010-11 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 3, for three days of preplanning. Students will report to schools on Friday, Aug. 6, to begin the school year.
