COVINGTON -- The Second Friday Summer Concert Series on the Square Park will kick off in June, and this year's series promises a variety of musical acts.
Concerts will take place the second Friday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. June through September on the Square in downtown Covington.
"During this economy, how important it is to have events where people don't have to pay so there's no strain financially on them," said Buncie Lanners, executive director of the Arts Association in Newton County, which is sponsoring the event along with Main Street Covington. "But we also get to come together as a community and enjoy the arts and enjoy the outdoors. Last summer this was so successful. It draws all ages, all different races -- different parts of the county come together."
Main Street Covington funds the series, while the Arts Association books the artists and helps with the technical aspects of the shows, Lanners said.
"It's designed to be a community-building, fun experience in the center of our county," Lanners said. "We try to bring in a nice mixture of different kinds of music over the summer."
The series gets under way June 11 with Infinity Show Band, a '70s and '80s funk group. On July 9, Emerald Rose, a Celtic group, will perform. Blues band Brook Honeycutt and Friends take the stage on Aug. 13. Also that evening, arts-related businesses will host open houses as part of A Night for the Arts celebration to support local artists.
The series will wrap up Sept. 10 with a performance by blues and jazz singer Francine Reed.
The public is encouraged to bring picnics, blankets and chairs.
