COVINGTON -- Work has begun on the roundabout at Turner Lake Road and Clark Street.
Clearing of trees and shrubs in preparation for construction began last week, according to City of Covington Transportation Manager Billy Skinner.
Skinner said every effort is being made to delay closure of the road as long as possible. The public will be notified prior to the closing, he said. Once the road is closed, the contractor has 180 days to complete the project.
"We hope they don't use all that time. That's what we're trying to do now, is get all the work possible done before they get to the point they have to close Turner Lake Road," Skinner said.
In addition to the roundabout, the project includes an underground lighted pedestrian tunnel leading to Turner Lake Recreation Complex as well as sidewalks and street lights.
The construction contract in the amount of $775,622 was awarded to J.J.E. Constructors Inc. of Atlanta. The project is under the supervision of the Georgia Department of Transportation and is being paid for through stimulus funds.
Skinner said he expects it will be completed by November. He asked that motorists pay extra attention and watch their speed as they drive through the intersection during the coming months for the safety of workers.
