CONYERS -- Police are investigating thefts of air conditioning units, valued at an estimated $10,000, at a facility run by local nonprofit Rockdale Cares Inc.
Thieves stole the units from Our Place, an adult day program for developmentally challenged individuals located at 875 Davis Drive. The thefts apparently happened over the weekend, as the units were still there last Friday.
Executive Director Barbara Kilpatrick said that day program workers came into a hot building Monday and discovered the outside AC units missing -- all four of them.
According to police reports, the wires connecting the units to the outside power breakers were cut.
Kilpatrick estimated the loss at about $10,000.
Rockdale Cares was able to get the units replaced Tuesday and Wednesday, after having to go out of state for a couple of them, but the incident is still disappointing, according to Kilpatrick.
"Because we're a nonprofit we have depend on other funding sources," Kilpatrick said.
Thieves also broke into Rockdale Cares' Haven House respite facility in February damaging the front glass door.
One of the newly installed televisions was stolen from one of the respite homes in Lighthouse Village, according to Kilpatrick. Rockdale Cares officials put in the television that Friday, hosted individuals on Saturday and Sunday, and found the TV missing on Monday.
