Recycled phones to benefit charity

COVINGTON -- If you've got an old cell phone lying around that isn't any use, the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce will help you dispose of it and you can help a good cause at the same time.

The Chamber of Commerce has launched a cell phone recycling program to benefit The Miracle League of Newton County. The Chamber is partnering with MyUsedPhone.com, which will pay $2.50 for every phone in good condition and 50 cents for phones that are missing components.

"They turn around and refurbish them if they can and if they can sell them, they do, and a portion of them are donated to places like battered women's shelters or to the elderly," said Chamber Programs Director Lisa Oglesby.

Money will go to the Chamber, with a portion to benefit The Miracle League of Newton County, an organization raising funds to build a baseball field for special-needs children.

To participate, visit www.newtonchamber.com, click on the My Used Phone icon and complete a short form. A self-addressed envelop with pre-paid postage will be sent and the phone can be placed inside and mailed back. Phones can also be dropped off at the Chamber at 2101 Clark St. and Newton Federal Bank at 3175 U.S. Highway 278.

The deadline to participate is Friday. For more information, call 770-786-7510.
