CONYERS -- Music lovers and other residents will get the chance to hear live opera while helping a new local group provide a resources for special-needs children.
The Rockdale County Autism Support Group is hosting "Autism Sings!" an opera concert scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Conyers Presbyterian Church, located at 911 N. Main St. Tickets are $12.
The music will include excerpts from several well-known operas, including "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," "Lakme" and "The Tales of Hoffmann." Performers will include several local singers and a couple of singers from out-of-town.
Katherine McGuire, a board member of the autism support group, said the evening's proceeds will go towards helping the group establish itself as a nonprofit. The new group hopes to start applying for grants to help fund summer camps and afterschool programs for children with autism.
Information about autism and local autism resources will be available during an informational reception after the performance.
The group hopes the public will come out, enjoy the music and maybe get some information about the group and what its are doing.
"We hope that they will come out to be entertained and maybe leave with some information about our group, as well," McGuire said.
